The University Library now offers unlimited, full text & image access to the archives of three South African newspapers. The titles offer an enormous richness in political, economic, cultural and daily news coverage of South Africa (and the rest of the continent) in the 20th and 21st century.
The following titles are available:
Rand Daily Mail (1902-1985)
First South African newspaper to openly oppose apartheid and contribute to its downfall, a few years after the paper stopped under mounting government pressure and obstruction. Best known for exposing the truth about the death in custody of anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko, in 1977.
Sunday Times archive (1906-2019)
South Africa’s largest Sunday newspaper has been covering the people, issues and events that shaped South Africa for over a century.
Sowetan archive (1981-2019)
Launched in a response to the appalling conditions in Soweto and other segregated black communities after the South African apartheid government had banned all other black newspapers in 1980. Impassioned editorials, engaging political columns and firsthand reporting soon helped it to become the country’s most widely circulated black paper.
The three titles can also be cross searched via South African Newspaper Archive.
