Due to environmental changes, fisher communities along the Caspian Sea are having to go deeper into the sea to catch fish argues Dr Farhad Mukhtarov in this article published on euronews.
Falling water levels are causing the Caspian Sea to shrink which is having a significant impact on local ecosystems and livelihoods along the Caspian coastline.
Dr Farhad Mukhtarov, Assistant Professor of Governance and Public Policy at the International Institute of Social Sciences (ISS) notes that fishing communities have to go deeper into the sea to catch the same amount of fish they used to catch nearby the shore.
Although this is causing them increased exposure to changing weather and sea conditions, Mukhtarov argues that cooperation and local resilience is enabling these communities to adapt.
