Nodoka Niiyama (Japan)

MA in Development Studies

Name: Nodoka Niiyama

Country: Japan

Background: During my undergraduate studies I focused on the studies of international law and international relations of Southeast Asia. In my role within the government of Japan, I had the opportunity to work on policies related to migration control, international cooperation in the field of law and justice, and regional revitalization. These experiences deepened my curiosity about the challenges in public policy and the intricacies of the "development" agenda itself.

Why study abroad?

I chose to study abroad because it expands my network. Additionally, as a student from non-English speaking country, I believe that pursuing an academic degree in English also opens doors for various career opportunities.

Why ISS?

Because ISS is one of the few institutions that offers an academic program focusing on the complex relationship between migration and development. I deeply appreciate the diversity of students in the ISS. We come from various countries, bringing unique professional experiences and academic interests to the table. Having previously worked as a civil servant, I find it particularly stimulating to discuss with classmates from different professional backgrounds, such as NGOs and the private sectors.

What I value most about studying at the ISS is its critical approach to development studies. The courses encourage in-depth discussions on essential topics such as coloniality and so-called North-South divide. This environment has broadened my understanding of diverse perspectives and prompted me to critically reflect on my own experiences and knowledge.

My prior experience engaging with migration-related policies primarily from a governmental and legal perspectives has been invaluable for pursuing my future career. However, academic experiences at the ISS allow me to challenge my previous assumptions and enriching my understandings of complex issues.

What scholarship were you awarded?

The ISS Hardship Fund. With the rising cost of living, it allowed me to focus on my studies rather than worry about my finances.

Would you recommend ISS to your friends?

Yes, especially for anyone who are interested in questioning and understanding development from multidisciplinary perspectives in a vibrant community.
