What happens when scaling up the artisanal production of rubber technologies in the Amazon for mass production in fashion value chains?

This is the question that Luciana dos Santos Duarte investigates in her Research in Progress seminar, part of her joint PhD research in Production Engineering and Development Studies.

She focuses on two case studies, both from the Brazilian Amazon: the 'vegetal leather' used in Hermès luxury bags, and the 'Smoked Liquid Sheet' used in the soles of Veja’s shoes.

Although both materials are produced in the same region and by the same actors (rural farmers and indigenous peoples), scaling up production has had very different consequences, both for the producers, the environment and the companies producing the materials.

The Research in Progress seminars are intended to provide an informal venue for presentations of ongoing research by ISS scholars and other scholars from the wider development studies community.
