Two book covers - Legal Mobilization and Radical Justice
  • How can we challenge inequality and pursue social change amid growing injustice, political uncertainty and systemic crises?
  • What can law offer social justice struggles that are confronting these challenges, and what can academia and activism learn from one another?

This book launch brings Nani Jansen Reventlow and Jeff Handmaker into conversation about their recent books, and to share their experiences across the domains of academic research, legal practice and political activism. They will explore the possibilities and limitations of using law to challenge power, the connections between scholarship and collective action, and how there are opportunities, both for legal learning and for leveraging systemic change.

The event welcomes academics, practitioners, activists, students and anyone else interested in inequality, law and social change.

About the books

  • Radical Justice: Building the world we need (Pluto Press 2026) — Nani Jansen Reventlow

In Radical Justice, international human rights lawyer Nani Jansen Reventlow asks how we can build a fundamentally different future through our own actions.

Drawing inspiration from anti-racist thinkers and social activists, the book offers practical ways to learn, reflect and act when injustice can leave us feeling powerless. From strategic litigation and digital rights to reparations and climate activism, it invites readers to recognise their capacity to contribute to radical change.

  • Legal Mobilization: Assessing the potential and limits of law-based civic advocacy (Edward Elgar 2026) — Jeff Handmaker

Jeff Handmaker examines the opportunities and challenges of using law to address systemic crises.

Through the concept of legal mobilization, and occasionally in conversation with others, the book explores how civic advocacy can challenge power while critically assessing the constraints and risks that advocates encounter. It offers insights into the conditions under which law can support struggles for structural change.
