On May 23, 2019, the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of the Erasmus University Rotterdam will organize a seminar on ‘Safety and security abroad for Universities’ in cooperation with the Centre for Safety and Development (CSD). Speakers from Denmark and the UK will tell us how their institutions prepare and support their staff and students and some well-known researchers with experience in complex regions will share their experiences.

Traffic accidents, muggings, hotel fires, kidnappings, terrorism and natural disasters. Research and study abroad, visits to partner institutions, conference visits and so forth are vital to our universities but clearly all such activity carries a certain level of risk and the more remote or complex the region visited, the higher the risk is likely to be.

Calamities that befall staff and students not only affect the individuals concerned but they can have an impact on the entire institution. Excellent preparation can reduce any risk to a minimum, thus enabling universities to meet their duty of care obligations as an employer and an educator, without imposing unnecessary restrictions on travel.

'Safety and Security for university staff and students in remote, complex and hazardous regions' seminar will take the discussion a step beyond the introductory seminar on the topic that was organised in 2017. The seminar will also provide a forum for the sharing of best practices.

It is especially useful for rectors, researchers who operate in complex and/or hazardous environments, HR managers, security advisors and any other colleagues who are responsible for or who work with employees and/or students who travel abroad on university business or for study purposes.

This seminar is free of charge, but there is a limited number of places available. You can guarantee your place by registering now here - Safety and Security for university staff and students in remote, complex and hazardous regions

If you are unable to attend, it would be very helpful if you could respond to our brief survey on safety and security matters. We will use the survey results to help us to define the next steps needed in order to ensure that our researchers are as safe as possible whilst working in the field. You can fill in the anonymous survey here - Safety and Security Survey
