200th PhD at ISS - cover

In celebration of this great achievement, we have produced a commemorative booklet listing all 200 PhD defences.

In her foreword to the booklet, ISS rector Professor Inge Hutter lists a few interesting facts related to the ISS PhD programme. She notes, for example that 47% of ISS PhD graduates are women, that over a third originated from Asia, a third from Africa and 15% from Latin America.

'It's an honour to be here'

The 200th PhD graduate was Sara Vigil, who defended her thesis on 7 November 2019.

Following Sara's successful defence, Inge Hutter presented the first edition of the booklet to Saskia Bruines, The Hague Deputy Mayor. On accepting the booklet, the Deputy Mayor noted: 'It’s an honour to be here. Two hundred doctorates is quite an achievement! .....The ISS’s fields of study and profile are a good match with this city: peace and security, peace and justice, humanitarian issues, women’s rights, migration. How to hold wicked regimes accountable. It is clear that many students from countries faced with a lot of challenges find it an honour to study here.'
