Passing away of Dr Freek Schiphorst

Freek Schiphorst

With a heavy heart we share the news that Dr Freek Schiphorst passed away on 30 March 2023.

Freek had been sick for some time and passed away peacefully surrounded by his family.

Freek was an anthropologist and obtained his PhD degree at Leiden University in 2001. Long before that date, he started working at ISS, first at the Wittebrug and later at the Kortenaerkade, always in the field of Labour Studies.

Freek took up various roles in the Works Council, he chaired the Board of Examiners and, from September 2013 to September 2019, he was the Deputy Rector for Educational Affairs. He retired in June 2020.

Freek was a much appreciated colleague, both as an academic and as member of the Institute Board. He worked closely with both academic staff and support staff at ISS. Students were also fond of him and he always had the interests of the students at heart. This was clear by his membership of the Student Emergency Fund SSH.

The ISS community will remember Freek as an extremely kind and supportive colleague, a solid and wonderful academic and for his tremendous sense of humour. He was closely connected to and embedded within ISS and will be missed dearly.
