Passing away Martin Doornbos

We are very sad to hear that Emeritus Professor Martin Doornbos passed away on 7 July 2020 at the age of 85.

Martin joined ISS in 1967 as a Senior Lecturer in Political Science. In 1973 he was awarded a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. In 1980 Martin was appointed as Professor of Politicial Science. He retired in 2000 but even after retirement he was still involved in PhD supervision and became a regular visitor to ISS.

The focus of Professor Doornbos' work was very much on the dynamics of state-society relations in Africa and India, on the institutional dimensions of conflict and collaboration, the politics of resource allocation, and on questions of state collapse and post-conflict reconstruction.

He was a visiting Professor of Development Studies at Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Uganda, and at the Graduate School of International Development Studies at Roskilde University in Denmark.

Martin Doornbos has published many articles and several books and was one of the founding editors of Development & Change when it started in 1969. He served on the Editorial Board until the end of 2003; he was the Chair of the Board until 1999. His role for the journal can hardly be overestimated. He was also Contributing Editor of the Review of African Political Economy.

We remember Martin as a highly appreciated colleague and a very kind person, a true gentleman. It was a pleasure to work with him, both for colleagues and students. He was kind, gentle and unassuming, though firm in his convictions, and always supportive.

Our thoughts go to Martin's wife Wicky Meynen, who also worked at ISS, both sons and further family and friends.
