Passing away Professor George Irvin

George Irvin

We are very sad to hear that Emeritus Professor George Irvin passed away last weekend.

A respected and important progressive development economist, Professor George Irvin worked at the International Institute of Social Studies for 25 years, leaving in 2001. He taught, conducted research and did consultancy in Africa, Asia and Latin America. During his time at ISS, Professor Irvin travelled widely for policy advice missions and project teaching.

He later took up a position at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London where he worked on world trade and financial flows and the EU economies.

Well-known in development circles for his early work on cost-benefit analysis, his best work was his study on income distribution in the USA and UK.

He cared deeply for his colleagues and students and is remembered fondly by them. He had wit and charm aplenty, but also a twinkle in his eye, for he loved life. George's loss will be deeply felt by all those who knew him.
