Resource nationalism in the extractive industries

Online seminar with Dr Jojo Nem Singh
Centre for International Policy Studies

On 15 March 2022, Dr Jojo Nem Singh will be part of a panel discussing 'Resurgent Resource Nationalism: Comparative Regional Experiences'

Organized online by the Centre for International Policy Studies (CIPS), the panel discussion will compare the experiences of different countries and regions, with a focus on the mining sector.

Panelists will discuss questions such as:

  • What are the drivers of resource nationalism in different countries?
  • What strategies have governments used to capture benefits from the multinational mining sector?
  • What have been the outcomes of these strategies?
  • What is the future of resource nationalism in the mining sector?

Assistant Professor at the International Institute of Social Studies, Dr Jojo Nem Singh will discuss emerging growth models in Latin America between 1990s and 2010s, stressing the apparent continuity of maintaining state owned enterprizes (SOEs) in managing natural resources despite the problems associated with state ownership. He will examine why primary commodity production locked the region away from export-oriented manufacturing both in periods of resource nationalism (1930-1970s) and liberalization (1980s-1990s).

Other speakers are:

  • Professor Kuntala Lahiri-Dutt - Professor at Australian National University, Crawford School of Public Policy, ANU College of Asia and the Pacific
  • Dr Richard Saunders - Associate Professor at York University, Ontario, Canada
  • Dr Agatha Siwalw-Mulenga - Research Fellow at the Southern African Institute for Policy and Research
