The Executive Board of Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor R. Ruard Ganzevoort (1965) as Rector of the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in The Hague.

He will take up this position on 15 August 2023, succeeding Professor Inge Hutter who has served as ISS Rector for the last eight years.

Ruard Ganzevoort has been Professor of Practical Theology at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam since 2005 and Dean of the Faculty of Religion and Theology at the same university since 2017. He has also been a member of the Senate of the Dutch Parliament for GroenLinks (GreenLeft) since 2011 and will step down this June.

“I am thrilled and honored to work with ISS in the years ahead on issues of global development and social justice. I am looking forward to get to know the ISS community!”

Professor Annelien Bredenoord, rector EUR: 'Erasmus University Rotterdam wants to engage with society, not from the ivory tower but as a knowledge institute embedded in society. ISS plays an important role in this. Ruard Ganzevoort stands out for his leadership, enthusiasm and commitment. We are positive he will be able to stimulate the debate on the future of development studies in a stimulating and engaging way and is a worthy successor to Inge Hutter’s great leadership. We wish him a warm welcome and much success.'

In their reports, the advisory committees and selection committee describe Ruard Ganzevoort as a very enthusiastic and motivated person with interesting perspectives; someone who should be able to stimulate the debate on the future of development studies at ISS in a positive and engaging way and who stands out for his academic and political experience.
