In this article, the authors discuss their research showing that SMS messages can play important symbolic roles in offering psychosocial support to people living with HIV (PLHIV) and improving their perception of life. 

Published in AIDS Care, this article looks at the use of mobile health (mHealth) and its potential to improve health outcomes in developing countries with high outreach yet low costs.

Based on the qualitative assessment of an SMS intervention in Burkina Faso, the authors show that SMS messages not only improve patients' medicine intake, but that they can also play important symbolic roles in offering psychosocial support to people living with HIV (PLHIV) and improving their perception of life.
