Even 'failed' land deals - those cancelled, withdrawn or never materialized – generate significant political struggles and have lasting consequences.

So argues Dr Doi Ra in her article published recently in Globalizations.
Drawing on surveys conducted in Kachin State, Myanmar, Doi Ra finds that even ‘failed’ land deals are sites of important and complex political struggles. However, outcomes of land struggles – whether in the form of ‘public victory’ or ‘silent return’ (of land to people; of people to the land) – do not necessarily translate to socially just outcomes for rural working people.
