Economic development and rising household incomes in many low- and middle-income countries changes peoples' nutrition habits (transition) that lead to a rise in overweight and obesity prevalence.
In her study, Mecheva aims to establish the presence of a nutrition transition in Indonesia and explore its dynamics and contributing factors at the sub-national level. She uses district level data (n=438) on the prevalence of overweight and obesity, socioeconomic indicators, household food consumption and infrastructure for 2007/08 and 2017/18.
She finds a strong link between changes in household income and the changing prevalence of adult overweight and obesity in long difference district models. She finds evidence suggesting that dietary shifts towards increased consumption of prepared foods mediate this association. Correlations with other predictors, including infrastructure and employment shares, were weak or insignificant in relation to overweight prevalence.
