Becoming a young farmer

New book focussing on youth who are aspiring to be farmers
Becoming a young farmer

Becoming a young farmer. Young people’s pathways into farming: Canada, China, India and Indonesia is a new open access publication edited by ISS alumna Dr Sharada Srinivasan focussing on youth who are aspiring to be farmers rather than on why youth leave the countryside.

The book includes contributions from several ISS former and current researchers, including Haroon Akram-Lodhi, Charina Chazali, Roy Huijsmans and Ben White.

The book is based on a multi-country collaborative research project and responds to concerns about the generational sustainability of smallholder farming worldwide.

It uses a life-course perspective and privileges the voices of (aspiring) young farmers in unravelling how (some) young people continue to pursue a (future) livelihood in farming. This way, the book shows that young people’s move away from farming and rural areas does not necessarily exclude eventual farming futures.
