Ten academic staff recently participated in the first ever PhD supervision course to be organized at the International Institute of Social Studies.

The course supports supervisors in improving their PhD supervision skills and encourages them to become self-reflexive and ready to continue learning from the everyday practice of the supervision and the interaction with their PhD candidates and co-supervisors.

The course, organized by Professor Thea Hilhorst and Professor Wil Hout, was completed by ten academic staff members. Next to the two organizers, facilitators included Professor Rosalba Icaza Garza, Frea Haandrikman, Bora Lushaj, Professor Lorenzo Pellegrini and Dr Matthias Rieger.

Postgrad Collaborations Platform

This course draws partly on materials that were developed and collected as part of the Creating Postgraduage Collaborations project, which has been implemented by a number of universities in South Africa, Kenya and Europe since 2011.

All materials, which include resources for supervisors and PhD researchers, are available under a Creative Commons BY SA licence and can be accessed on three interlinked websites through the common Creating Postgraduate Collaborations Platform.

In 2022, as part of the Creating Postgraduate Collaborations project, a supervision course was offered in a hybrid form at the nine partner universities of the consortium, which are located in various European countries, Kenya and South Africa.

Participants in that course included 14 recent ISS PhD graduates and advanced PhD researchers.
