Volunteers jump at the chance of going to developing countries to help orphans, believing that they will make a difference in the lives of these children. But as Manasi Nikam states, there is a dark side to orphanages, that is orphanage tourism, and that ISS scholars are increasingly advising against engaging in this pursuit.
Nikam discusses the experiences of ISS scholars who in the past have undertaken research in the field while also shedding light on the 'orphanage industry', if volunteering actually has an impact and the abuse endured by children in such orphanages.
