PPI Belanda and the coloniality within

Article by PhD researcher Tamara Soukotta
Royal Palace Amsterdam

In this article published in The Jakarta Post, PhD reseacher Tamara Soukotta reflects on the stance of Indonesian intellectuals to colonialism.

In her article, Soukotta reflects on a recent Instagram reel by the Indonesian Students Association in the Netherlands (PPI Belanda) on the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. Arguing that parts of the reel feed into the colonial narrative, she wonders whether Indonesian intellectuals take colonialism seriously.

Historically, PPI Belanda was a political association of Indonesian intellectuals in the Netherlands and was an important part of the Indonesian anti-colonial movement. Its political awareness has waned in recent years and Soukotta argues that the recent Instagram reel makes assessing its approach to colonialism urgent.
