The rapid rise of digital platforms for agriculture in Africa

Lecture by Oane Visser at Cornell Institute for Digital Agriculture
Drone over crop field - the rise of digital farming

Dr Oane Visser recently gave an invited lecture at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) taking a critical look at the rapid rise of digital platforms for agriculture in Africa.

Focusing on his joint research with two International Institute of Social Studies alumni, Fabio Gatti and Sam Nicholas Atanga (both recent graduates of ISS’ Agrarian, Food & Environmental Studies major), Visser highlighted the rapid rise of digital platforms for agriculture in Africa.

Based on research in Ghana, as one of Africa’s rising hubs of digitalization, their study shows that there are substantial gaps between the claims made by the platform providers and ICT4All proponents, and the realities on the ground. While the digitalization of agriculture offers new possibilities, it is not a magic bullet and comes with limitations and new risks.
