Rolph van der Hoeven elected to UN's Economic and Social Council

Professor Rolph van der Hoeven has been elected to the Committee for Development Policy of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). He replaces Teresa Rivera from Spain.

Rolph van der Hoeven will hold the position from 1 January 2019 until 31 December 2021. He was nominated for the position by the UN General Secretary, Antonio Guterres.

The International Institute of Social Studies has been closely linked to the Committee for Development Policy; Rolph van der Hoeven is the third Dutch ISS professor to join the Committee.

Professor Jan Tinbergen of Erasmus University Rotterdam was the first chair of the Committee, appointed in 1964. 2019 is the fiftieth anniversary of Jan Tinbergen receiving the Nobel prize in Economics and will be commemorated with events throughout the year.

  • Professor Ferdinand van Dam, Professor at ISS in the 1980s
  • Professor Hans Opschoor, Professor and previous Rector of ISS

About the UN Economic and Social Council

ECOSOC is one of the six main organs of the UN. It is at the heart of the United Nations system to advance the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental. It is the central platform for fostering debate and innovative thinking, forging consensus on ways forward, and coordinating efforts to achieve internationally agreed goals. It is also responsible for the follow-up to major UN conferences and summits.
