On Monday, 13 November from 15:45-17:30, participants to the 19 Development Dialogue PhD conference can take part in 'The Thing From the Future' workshop.

In 'The Thing From the Future', 8 to 20 participants  will embark on a creative journey to imagine and design artefacts from the future.

The game begins by exploring four distinct scenarios: growth, collapse, discipline and transformation, from four distinct perspectives:

  • members of a cooperative
  • owners of a big corporation
  • academics
  • public market vendors.

Each scenario and perspective represents a different vision of the future and participants will collectively brainstorm and ideate on what kind of object might exist in each of these futures.

Objectives

  1. Fun and engagement: The primary objective of this activity is to provide conference attendees with an enjoyable and interactive experience that breaks away from traditional conference formats. It encourages creative thinking and playful engagement.
  2. Reflection and future scenarios: By exploring different scenarios, participants will be prompted to reflect on the various possibilities and challenges that may arise in the pursuit/transformation of each of them. It encourages attendees to think critically about the limits of growth and the need for alternative approaches.
  3. Visualise and discuss objects and system roles: Through the creation of future artefacts, participants will gain insights into the role of objects, technologies and socio-technical systems in shaping our future. This interactive exercise will stimulate discussion on the impact of technology, design, and development on society.

'The Thing from the Future' was developed by Situation Lab, a project known for designing immersive and generative situations for the public good. It offers a playful yet reflexive way for attendees to engage with the conference’s themes. It promotes collaboration, creativity, and the exchange of ideas, aligning with the conference’s objectives.
