In her article, '“Taken-left” dynamics? Rethink the livelihood changes of affected villagers in the era of the global land rush', Yunan Xu analyses the 'taken-left' dynamics of the global land rush in rural villages in China.

She argues that the consequences of land being taken from villagers is not all negative; indeed some villagers maintain and even expand thier livelihoods following the acquisition of massive amounts of land by big investors.

By examing not only what is taken but also what is left to villagers, she highlights that villagers control over farmland plots and their access to off-farm work opportunities remain.
