On 7 Â November, as part of the Migration Seminar Series, Antony Otieno Ongayo (Post-Doctoral Researcher) Â will give a seminar on 'African Diaspora communities in the Netherlands: Collective organizing, political remittances, cultural circulation and policy Influence in the country of residence and origin'
In this seminar, Antony Otieno Ongayo will suggest that a better understanding of the role of African diaspora communities in the Netherlands requires examination of the nature of their collective organizing, the role of agency in the Diasporas, activity fields and strategies targeting the political and policy spheres both in the Netherlands and countries of origin.
His aim is to demonstrate the likely areas of impact of self-organizing and civic-energy within the municipalities of residence and in the country of origin. This approach should consider the diversity of African groups, differences in the trajectories of migration, settlement conditions (integration) and possibilities to return in efforts to explain the nature of their influence on local policies and likely political and socio-cultural and economic impact. These insights are useful for interrogating diaspora engagement policies that target diaspora involvement in the co-implementation of social policies in the Netherlands and countries of origin.
