Seminar - women activism in Kosovo

Linda Gusia, a sociologist and feminist activist, has been invited to speak at ISS. In this seminar she will discuss women movements and the complexities of female activism.

The seminar will focus on positions of women in nationalist movements, particularly the role that motherhood plays in mobilization of women, drawing from examples of women activism in Kosovo during the 1990's.

In the 90's, women became active in peaceful resistance in Kosovo. Through voluntarism, community solidarity and activism, a solid ground was created from which civil society flourished and a women movement began.

Their activism was foremost a reaction to the escalation of violence but created a unique opportunity to challenge and redefine the terms upon which the gendering of power relations occurred. Looking through different examples the seminar aims at accounting for the multiplicity and complexity of women's activism, mobilization, and solidarity.
