Students from the International Committee of ISS' student association Scholas are hosting Catalonia week.  After a successful event on 29 May on the Catalan language at school as an equity goal, there will be an event on 1 June 2018 entitled 'The Catalan independence process: going beyond the news headlines'. The event will be moderated by ISS professor Dr Kees Biekart.

The Catalan independence process: going beyond the news headlines

Friday 1 June 2018, 18:00-20:00

During this event we want to go beyond the main (international) headlines about the Catalan independence process. The aim is to present to an international audience the different arguments on the Catalonian independence referendum and/or independence. The intention is to give a sense of what the motivations are for someone to support and be involved in the process. Moreover, this roundtable intends to show how opinions within the Catalan independence process vary, as there are different views even within the pro-referendum or pro-independence block.

Panelists will present the political situation in Catalonia as well as the current state of Catalonia-Spain relations. They will discuss views on Europe’s role in the conflict as well as potential roadmaps for resolving the conflict. Dr Kees Biekart will moderate the discussion.

Panelists

  • Josep Maria Forné Febrer - Catalan MP
  • Oriol Cases Vila - Assistant to the MEP Josep-Maria Terricabras
  • Lilith Verstrynge - Podemos, Assistant to MEP Esterania Torres
  • Eva Riera - Foreign Affairs Secretary of the Catalan National Assembly

The discussion will be followed by a reception with Catalan food in the ambience of Catalan music.
