During this Research in Progress Seminar at the International Institute of Social Studies, Adjoa Annan will discuss a quantitative study into how quality enhancement in the cocoa and shea value chains in Ghana is promoted and controlled.
In her study, 'Promoting quality in agricultural value chains; a means for quality control or resource capture? A study of the cocoa and shea value chains in Ghana', Adjoa Annan, observed a disconnection in the promotion of quality in both cocoa and shea value chains. Whereas in the downstream of the chains, the quality of value chains was promoted as a branding and marketing tool, in the upstream, it was promoted as a control and sourcing tool.
The study reflects on the power relations and control dynamics in buyer-driven commodity chains. It also sets to evoke policy-makers to reflect on food and agricultural policies that seek to reduce costs and risks among producers. It is hoped that the study will prompt cocoa and shea industry players to promote sourcing and branding strategies that will help producers capture higher values.
