This study focuses on the interactions between men’s and women’s paid employment, potential care responsibilities and possibilities of replacement of care within the households in India. There has been increasing scholarly engagement that explain low and declining female labour force participation in India. This paper contributes to the ongoing discussion and look at relatively lesser explored concern about possible negotiations about livelihoods and employment that are embedded in household characteristics and socio- economic context. It analyses the work patterns of men and women belonging to households that vary in composition, economic class, dependency and social/gender attitude
