How do women (and men) at ISS define what it means to be a strong woman? How do they understand strength? Does it symbolize having it all? Does it mean a successful career? Does it mean challenging patriarchy? Or does it mean having the choice and freedom to take a break, rest and ask for help?
Our Global ISSues podcast team is searching for answers and creating a platform for our community during our week of storytelling in honour of this year's Women's History Month!Â
Storytelling week
This year's International Women's Day theme is '#BreaktheBias', which calls us to reimagine and create a gender equal world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us many versions of women's strength, but it's also exposed what was often invisibility, too.
The focus of this week will be to unpack how women's strength has been conventionally looked at, specifically in the domain of care work), and how these notions and opinions are changing or evolving, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Our activities
Global ISSues pop-up studio, 21-22 March (9:00-18:00)The glass room near the front entrance of ISS is transforming into the Global ISSues studio! Our podcast host Surabhi Srivastava will be at ISS to welcome you into the studio to 'grab the mic'! We invite you to make your own recording of perceptions of strength. The recordings will document and chronicle diverse narratives and experiences of women's gumption and perseverance. |
Live audience recording and afterparty, 24 March (16:00-17:30)Join us in Aula B for the first live audience recording of the Global ISSues podcast. Assistant Professor Sree Sathiamma and PhD researcher Brenda RodrÃguez Cortés join our host Surabhi Srivastava in discussion to continually unpack the 'strong woman' trope. In this format, we are inviting only 30 guests to join us for this intimate session. After the recording ends at 17:00, we invite you to celebrate the occasion over drinks and snacks. |
