Sustainable Development Goals in Repressive Regimes: Can Development be detached from Human Rights?
Analysing the case of Nicaragua
Organized by SOS Nicaragua-Holanda, Nicas en Holanda, Nicaragua Karavaan and the International Institute of Social Studies, this workshop will consider questions of the relationship between democracy, development and human rights taking the situation in Nicaragua and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals as a starting point.
Background
An end to extreme poverty, inequality, injustice and climate change, are core objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the UN in 2015. These objectives must be achieved before 2030.
However, an increasing number of countries in Latin America and elsewhere are experiencing new and more extreme forms of violence and state repression and corruption, rampant violations of human rights- including arbitrary dismissals, extrajudicial executions and media closures- as well as the destruction of the environment.
The Nicaraguan context
Nicaragua is among these countries in a deep political and social crisis, with major consequences for both people and nature. Since April 2018 there have been massive protests in Nicaragua, initially motivated by cuts in pension funds, as well as the failure of the government to help extinguish a major forest fire in 'Indio Maiz', an important biological reserve in the region.
Since then, protesters have been violently repressed, persecuted and imprisoned by the government. Achieving the SDGs seems to become increasingly unrealistic in such a context. Moreover, it raises questions about the relationship between democracy, development and human rights.
- Is it possible to work towards sustainable development in contexts were major human right violations are taking place?
- What new engagements and solidarities can we cultivate to support people’s struggles for their rights?
The workshop
In this workshop we hope to engage students, staff, members of the Nicaraguan solidarity movement and the broader public with these questions by taking the situation in Nicaragua and the SDGs as a starting point.
An essential part of the workshop will be the participation of Nicaraguan refugees themselves who have fled from the violence and repression, but from exile continue in their struggle for democracy.
This workshop is open to all!

Los objetivos de desarrollo sostenible en regímenes represivos: Es posible separar el desarrollo de los derechos humanos? Analizando el caso de Nicaragua
Organizado por SOS Nicaragua-Holanda, Nicas en Holanda y Nicaragua Karavaan, junto con el Instituto de Estudios Sociales (ISS) este taller abordará la relación entre democracia, desarrollo y derechos humanos, tomando como punto de partida la situación en Nicaragua y los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (SDG) de la ONU.
Antecedentes
El fin de la pobreza extrema, la desigualdad, la injusticia y el cambio climático, son elementos centrales en los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (SDG's) establecidos por la ONU en 2015. Estos objetivos deben lograrse antes del 2030. Sin embargo, una creciente cantidad de países en Latinoamérica y otras partes, están enfrentando nuevas-y más excesivas- formas de violencia, represión y corrupción estatal, violaciones graves a los derechos humanos (incluyendo despidos arbitrarios, ejecuciones extrajudiciales, y el cierre de los medios de comunicación), así como la destrucción del medio ambiente.
El contexto de Nicaragua
Nicaragua es uno de estos países que se encuentran en una profunda crisis política y social, con consecuencias profundas para las personas y la naturaleza. Desde abril de 2018 se han dado protestas masivas en Nicaragua, inicialmente engendradas por los recortes en las pensiones, así como la falta del gobierno en ayudar a extinguir el incendio en Indio Maíz, una reserva biológica sumamente importante de la región.
Desde entonces lxs participantes en las protestas han sido violentamente reprimidxs, perseguidxs y encarceladxs por el gobierno. Alcanzar los SDGs parece ser algo cada vez menos factible en este contexto. Además, genera preguntas sobre la relación entre democracia, desarrollo y derechos humanos.
- Es posible trabajar hacia el desarrollo sostenible en un contexto en el que se dan violaciones graves de derechos humanos?
- Qué tipo de compromisos y solidaridades podemos cultivar para apoyar las luchas de las personas por sus derechos?
El taller
En este taller esperamos poder involucrar a estudiantes, colegas, miembrxs del movimiento de solidaridad con Nicaragua y el público en general en un debate sobre estas cuestiones, tomando la situación en Nicaragua y los de los SDGs, como un punto de partida.
Una parte esencial del taller será la participación de lxs refugiados nicaragüenses quienes han huido de la violencia y represión, pero continúan la lucha por la democracia desde exilio.
