An analysis of the dynamics of resource grabbing and emerging networks of peasant resistance in Mali in the past decade.

In this new article, PhD researcher at the International Institute of Social Studies, Daniela Calmon along with scholar-activists Massa Koné and Chantal Jacovetti (Malian Convergence against Land Grabbing) explore emerging trends in natural resource politics through the lens of interactions between land and climate policies and discourses in Mali.

They analyze some of the broader dynamics of resource grabbing and emerging networks of peasant resistance in Mali in the past decade, as well as the implications of the growing use of the frame of ‘climate security’ in international spheres to associate climate change, conflict and migration. Focusing on the recent pilot implementation of village land commissions in southern Mali based on a new Agricultural Land Law, they explore the the possibilities and challenges of trying to build ‘agrarian climate justice’ from the ground.
