Inaugural lectures by Prince Claus Chair holders

Professors Gustavo García López and Seye Abimbola gave their inaugural lectures as Prince Claus Chair holders. They presented their research on the climate crisis (García López) and justice and equity in global health (Abimbola).

In the (virtual) presence of Her Majesty, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, Gustavo García López and Seye Abimbola presented their research as Prince Claus Chair holders.

 Professor Gustavo García López discussed the connectivities between the climate crisis and colonialism.

Drawing on his experiences from the Caribbean islands of Boriken/Puerto Rico, he positions justice in relation to land, sovereignty and commons-making: Caring for territories and our human and non-human families, democratically, equitably, free.

Professor Seye Abimbola, Prince Claus Chair holder 2020-2022

The Prince Claus Chair in Equity and Development was established by Utrecht University and the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University Rotterdam in 2003, and rotates annually between the two institutions.

The aim of the chair is to boost the career of outstanding young researchers from developing countries and to stimulate knowledge sharing. The universities wish to use the chair to advance research and education in the field of equity and development in accordance with the views and insights of Prince Claus.
